The plan is to reach the Aral Sea desert. What seemed to be quite a fairly easy ride down south, turned out to be a mad hunt for petrol. Going above and beyond any expectation Penelope never runs out, and somehow managea to bring me with one tank to the closest gas station, 420 Km away! At last, the Aral sea; the fourth largest lake in the world (a long time ago…). The Aral Sea, so called because it is salted, has been shrinking since the 1960s after the rivers that fed it were diverted by Soviet irrigation projects. The shrinking of the Aral Sea has been called “one of the planet’s worst environmental disasters”. It is also one of the most unique landscapes I ever saw, its beauty and peace deceive, though, a tragic reality. Ralph, Claus and I manage to find accommodation in a yurt overlooking it all.
